The Deadwood Stage has just arrived in Deadwood City. Everyone is gathered in "The Golden Garter" (a combined depot, hotel, bar and theatre) and is operated by Henry Miller. His niece Susan also lives here. Wild Bill Hickock, an old friend of Calamity Jane, who likes to make fun of her whenever he can, is gambling as usual. Henry Miller is anxious to meet an actress, Frances Fryer, who has come in on the Deadwood Stage to perform at "The Golden Garter". Unfortunately it is not Frances but Francis, a song and dance man. After much persuasion Henry Miller agrees to let Francis Fryer do his act that night. This doesn't go down well! Henry Miller has to convince the audience that he will make it up to them by getting an actress. Calamity promises them Adelaide Adams, a vaudeville star from Chicago who all the men of Deadwood City adore from picture cards in packs of cigarettes, including Wild Bill Hickock and Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin. Our Heroine has something of a soft spot for Danny but he does not feel the same way about her. After further mistakes on Calamity's part, she brings who she believes to be Adelaide Adams to Deadwood City. Unfortunately this is not the case and she is exposed as Katie Brown, a dresser for Miss Adams. Wild Bill Hickock falls in love with Katie but Danny is also in love with her and Calamity is in love with Danny. Danny and Bill both go to Calamity's cabin to ask Katie to the ball at Fort Scully. Eventually Katie convinces them that they could go as a foursome. Neither of them can imagine Calamity at a ball. They draw straws to see who will take Katie. Bill loses and takes Calamity. At the ball Calamity sees Danny kiss Katie and she causes a scene and Bill takes her home. The show closes with a triple wedding ! |
